Carbon Footprint research
The global climate change is a hot topic in public debate. Retailers are announcing they will demand from suppliers to provide insight into the impact of their production on global warming. At first sight the start of labelling products in supermarkets could mean a new barrier for tropical products from developing countries. Therefore TASTE found it important to create insight into the carbon footprint of several Fairtrade fruit categories which are exported to Europe. Eventually, research done in cooperation with LEI (Agricultural Research Institute) and the Dutch Horticultural Board revealed that the Green House Gas Emission of the banana chain from Ecuador is relatively low. A workshop, organised by TASTE, was helpful to establish working relationships with donors and partners. TASTE is working with different parties to be able to offer value chain partners (producers, importers, retailers) with an instrument to turn the Carbon Footprint score into a handling perspective; to reduce, compensate or substitute the use of energy.

New Product Development - sustainable vegetables
TASTE noticed a potential demand for vegetables produced in a social, sustainable and environmental friendly way. Therefore they initiated a desk study to calculate the opportunities, challenges and risks to start a value chain for vegetables. Together with different parties from the chain, like retailers, importers and certifications bodies, the possibilities to source from Africa are being reviewed.

Develop and implement new business models
Develop and implement new business models that offer communities to improve their living conditions through transparent and sustainable trade relationships. Models may focus on small holders, outgrowers and bigger producer organisations. Basic rule is to improve living conditions, working conditions and develop sustainable production and durable trade relations.

New sustainable concepts
Organic and Fairtrade are two certified examples of sustainability in the value chain. TASTE supports new initiatives to develop other concepts of sustainability in close collaboration with the demand of the retail sector.
